nimShowreel2023
Showreel for the creative studio nim. From its inception to the present, the video provides an overview of nim's journey.
We wanted to incorporate nim's strengths in the production rather than just compiling the works, so the introduction features the team's first-ever independent production.
Vast Ocean and Boundless Sky
The idea for the VR game-like video was inspired by the fact that the team has been working on many game-related projects since its inception, and that teenagers make up a large portion of the audience.
Featuring a personified version of nim as the main character, the visual unfolds from the opening sequence to the title screen, all from a first-person perspective.
The video depicts the dawn of a new narrative, portraying the team's ongoing pursuit of innovation with a unique approach. This journey has unveiled new scenery and ambitious goals.
The sea and sky spreading out beyond the door symbolizes not only the creation of new designs but also signifies the team's overseas endeavors in the future.
In this scene inspired by VR games, the music draws inspiration directly from the games themselves.
To mimic the atmospheric quality and mechanics of game music, we used a piano, string instruments, and synthesizers with a wide stereo feel. The composition aimed for a dynamic arrangement, disregarding the constraints of a metronome grid, to evoke the feel of the player triggering events within the game world, ensuring the music adapts seamlessly to the situation.
For the music of the reel, which is a culmination of the year's work, we chose a genre centered around the "Neuro Bass" sound.
It is centered around distorted synthesizers and heavy drums, but also has a delicate and organic atmosphere with gamelan instruments and harmonic guitars, and is a perfect match for a wide range of visuals from poppy 2D graphics to desolate 3D environmental designs. It represents nim's versatility as a team.
Guiding Light
"With a desire to challenge what no one else had accomplished, he stepped into the ruins. In the darkness of 40 degrees below zero, unsure of which path leads out, his spirit wavers until a robot appears. Bouncing around as if delighted by his arrival, it seems to be welcoming him eagerly.”
"The robot was born as a guide for the ruins, but as time passed without anyone coming, it was left alone. In the endless solitude, the robot pondered what lies ahead of the guided path. Gradually, the desire to venture beyond the ruins began to sprout. However, the robot cannot abandon the mission that it is programmed to do.”
The robot guiding the main character in an unknown language. Talking through beeps.
"Without him, the robot could not see what was beyond the door, and without him being guided by the robot, he would not have made it through the ruins. This encounter became a beacon of hope for both.”
Given that the theme revolves around "first-person perspective game-like visuals," it was necessary to maintain a consistent camera work while laying out and polishing the 3D scenes.
To ensure that a sense of scale and adjustments could be made within the limited camera space, scene modeling and layout were primarily built procedurally, except for certain parts, allowing for flexibility in production.
Treating the protagonist, robots, and environmental sounds as three main categories of sound effects, we meticulously controlled each echo and detail, portraying the transition from narrow corridors to expansive, open spaces.
We consider the "surprise" upon opening the door to be the essence of this piece. In contrast to the lush and colorful landscape outside, the interior of the ruins is dark and austere, creating a visual contrast.
When the robot opens the door with a password in an unknown language, it reveals a vast expanse of sea and sky. Within this expansive scenery lies another door waiting to be opened.
The graphics of the game UI were inspired by those used in modern space exploration, incorporating elements of interfaces from sci-fi movies while considering the environment and atmosphere of the explorers. Displays such as maps and compass directions synchronize with the player's perspective like a first-person game, and the external temperature of the suit changes in real-time to match the situation.
Primitive Gateway
The title logo for "nim Showreel 2023" is a design that blends existing fonts with typography derived from nim's logo, aligning with the reel's nature of encountering unknown cultures and combining multiple visuals.
The sky was composited, providing flexibility to adjust cloud and light source placement, as well as the sky's tone, to match the title logo.
Based on a game’s title screen.
When you press "Press to Start," the reel begins with a 3D cinematic space centered around the door, accompanied by a world of 2D motion graphics.
After the reel ends, you find yourself back in front of the door.
The outline of the door is highlighted, hinting that it was part of the nim logo all along.
